According to the Catalogue (Postpischl, 1985), the 1846 Orciano earthquake is a very important, high-intensity (X MCS) event located in a moderately seismic area (Southwestern Tuscany). After a critical revision of the information available from published sources, the documents of the government survey were located and processed for macroseismic purposes. The data contained in the administrative forms required an original interpretative method, aiming to supply information suitable for intensity assessment. The intensity values generally come out lower than those previously assessed only by means of the interpretation of the published sources, though the intensity distribution pattern does not appear to be substantially modified. A preliminary investigation on the far-field area reveals that the event was felt over an area coherent with the size of the event suggested by the epicentral intensity.
