COPOLYMERIZATION OF STYRENE AND SUBSTITUTED STYRENES WITH TI(OMEN)4-METHYLALUMINOXANE CATALYST

Copolymerizations of styrene and substituted styrenes were carried out at room temperature with a Ti(OMen)4-methylaluminoxane catalyst and the monomer reactivity ratios (r) were estimated by using the Fineman-Ross method. From the plot of log r versus σ in the Hammett equation, log r = ρ σ, ρ was approximately -1.2. The negative value of ρ suggested that polymerization of these styrene monomers proceeds not via a coordinated anionic but via a coordinated cationic mechanism. The results of copolymerization between styrene and α-olefins supported the mechanism. © 1990, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
