QUANTUM TRANSLATION-INVARIANCE AND THE SUPERCONDUCTING TRANSITION IN LAYERED BULK MATERIALS

In bulk materials with a layer structure, the Lie algebra of momenta in the layer has an arbitrary real central charge, alpha, associated with projective realisations of translation invariance. The 1-particle energy eigenstates are then Landau orbits in the layers, propagating freely in the perpendicular direction. For large enough alpha, "Cooper pairs" of such Landau orbits can give rise to bulk superconductivity, with a transition temperature higher than for vanishing central charge (plane waves).
