INFLUENCE OF MAGNETIC-FIELD ON THE PRECIPITATION OF SOME INORGANIC SALTS

Calcium and manganese(II) carbonate, phosphates of magnesium, calcium, iron(II), cobalt(II) and zinc, and calcium oxalate and sulfate have been precipitated at 25 degrees C in a magnetic field of 0.27 T. An effect of the field was found only for carbonates and phosphates with diamagnetic metal ions. Rates of nucleation and crystal growth are increased in magnetic field. The results are explained in terms of faster proton transfer from hydrogen carbonate and hydrogen phosphate ions to water, due to proton spin inversion in the external field or in the field of a paramagnetic ion.
