W-BOSON-TOP-QUARK BACKGROUND TO HEAVY-HIGGS-BOSON PRODUCTION

摘要
Relevant to WW physics and heavy-Higgs-boson detection through its decay H --> W+ W- --> lv+2 jets at the Superconducting Super Collider is the subprocess bg --> Wt. We study this process over the invariant-mass region M(Wt) > 850 with respect to a 1-TeV Higgs boson using top-quark masses of m(t) = 100 and 175 GeV. The cross sections in this region give a signal-to-background ratio of about 1:20. After applying further restrictions at the hadronic level for eliminating top quarks in conjunction with some basic parton level cuts, we find this ratio can be improved to 1:1. Polarization properties are also discussed.
