Eric Higgs is an Assistant Director of Research in the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology at Cambridge and is in charge of special research into the history of agriculture, a project sponsored by the British Academy. M. R. Jarman holds a Fellowship in this Academy project. In this article they give the firstfruits of their consideration of the whole problem of the origins of agriculture, and are at pains to point out that by agriculture they mean here both animal and plant husbandry. Over the last forty years ANTIQUITY has published many articles dealing with the beginnings of animal and plant husbandry and it welcomes this article as a fresh start in thinking about an old theme. © 1969, Antiquity Publications Ltd.
