摘要
The concept of intrinsic merit of a plasma emission source is introduced. In practice signals can only be utilized after passing through a spectrometer and measuring system, and they thus have a contribution from dark current. Necessary and sufficient criteria are derived for the intrinsically better plasma to give the better detection limit for the cases of hyperbolic and linear relationships of dark current to gain, with noise a linear or square root function of background, and for any gains, the same gain or maximum gain. It is shown that detection limits are not necessarily reliable indicators of relative intrinsic merits of plasma sources. © 1979.
