TEMPERATURE TRENDS OVER THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION, 1950-88

Air temperatures in the Western Mediterranean area exhibited a positive trend during the last 40 years, whilst the Eastern Mediterranean area showed a decrease. The mean temperature of the surface/500 hPa layer exhibited a positive trend in both the Western and Eastern Mediterranean. This almost continuous increase of mean temperature is partly due to horizontal ther-mal advection and mainly to diabatic warming. Sea surface temperatures show a negative trend throughout the Mediterranean area. The time series of sea surface temperatures in the Eastern Mediterranean show evidence of 48- and 54-month harmonics, while the time series in the Western Mediterranean show evidence of 28- or 30-month harmonics.
