DETERMINATION OF THE SOUND VELOCITIES AND THE COMPLETE SET OF ELASTIC-CONSTANTS FOR BI2SR2CACU2O8+DELTA SINGLE-CRYSTALS USING BRILLOUIN LIGHT-SCATTERING

We report on room-temperature Brillouin light scattering experiments on the (001) and (010) planes of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta single crystals. The Rayleigh surface mode, the surface resonance of the longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon and two transverse acoustic bulk phonons are observed. The sound velocity determined from the surface resonance of the LA bulk phonon is isotropic for the wavevector q parallel to the CuO2-planes, but it is reduced by 30% if q is perpendicular to these planes. Compared to YBa2Cu3O7-x, the sound velocities of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta are smaller by about 30%. The complete set of elastic constants derived from the sound velocities of the surface modes is determined to be c11 = 125.2 +/- 10.4 GPa, c12 = 78.9 +/- 6.9 GPa, c13 = 56.0 +/- 6.3 GPa, c33 = 75.8 +/- 9.4 GPa and C44 = 15.8 +/- 1.3 GPa.
