Products of digestion of the protoxin crystals of Bacillus thuringiensis var. berliner by gut juice of larvae of Pieris brassicae were examined by gel filtration, antigenic analysis, electrophoresis and toxicity tests. The digest was separated into 2 fractions; fraction 1 contained a protein of molecular weight > 200,000, and fraction 2 contained a peptide with a molecular weight between 5000 and 10,000. Only fraction 2 was toxic to the insect larvae on injection although both fractions were toxic by feeding. The association of toxicity of fraction 2 with certain antigens is described and a possible relationship between the two fractions is discussed. Copyright © 1968, Wiley Blackwell.
