A well-crystallized sodium super ionic conductor (NASICON: Na1+xZr2SixP3-xO12, 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 3) was synthesized by a sol-gel method from aqueous solutions of inorganic materials with an Na excess stoichiometric composition at a relatively low temperature of 850 degrees C. A trace of monoclinic ZrO2 was observed, however, with increasing calcination temperatures up to 1000 degrees C. It was found that the process of making sol from solutions was the most important step to reduce secondary phases such as ZrO2. NASICON thickfilms were also fabricated on a quartz substrate by a spin-coating method using a paste made from fine xerogel powder and isoamyl alcohol.
