E.S.R. measurement on one of the two radicals associated with x-irradiated single crystals of 5-iododeoxyuridine show that the radical is formed by the removal of a hydrogen atom from the C5' carbon atom of the deoxyribose sugar group. The results are explained with a spin Hamiltonian which includes hyperfine splitting tensors for three protons. These hyperfine tensors and the g tensor are evaluated with respect to the crystal axes. The tensors are shown to have their principal axes lying approximately along directions predicted from a model based on the molecular structure obtained from x-ray analysis. © 1969 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted.
