TEMPERATURE-DEPENDENCE OF XANES IN CEO2-TB2O3.5 MIXED CONDUCTOR

XANES spectra of the L3 absorption edge of CeO2-Tb2O3.5 mixed conductors were measured. Two absorption peaks were observed at about 7.5 keV with an energy separation of 8.5 eV, which corresponded to the chemical shift of the rare-earth ions. From this experimental result, the co-existence of tetravalent and trivalent state ions in CeO2-Tb2O3.5 mixed conductor was confirmed. The decrease of the fraction of Tb4+ ions with increasing temperature was found from the temperature dependence of XANES spectra. This decrease of Tb4+ content explained the observed temperature dependence of electronic conduction from a small polaron model. © 1990.
