摘要
On a recent trip to Russia I was startled to discover that public fascination with a free press was short lived. During the rise of glasnost and the collapse of the Communist Party, citizens followed the news with keen interest, as television cameras dogged politicians, and public affairs programs brought citizen complaints and concerns to national attention. Television news magazine formats introduced docudrama techniques, taking viewers on camera-eye tours through the sites of political corruption, scandal, and emerging social problems. Newspapers started up by the thousands despite shortages of newsprint, unfamiliarity with advertising, and little in the way of professional journalism training or norms. All the signs pointed to the possibility of the media leading the transition to popular democracy through some sort of communications revolution. © 1992, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
