The influence of the matrix of Colletotrichum musae on spore germination is at least two-fold. Freshly collected spore matrix, from 10- to 20-d-old cultures contains a germination inhibitor which declines in activity in time and loses its effect between 40 and 55 d. As a consequence, removal of the matrix by washing during this period enhances germination. Removal of the matrix after this period, however, depresses germination. Possible reasons for this are considered. In 100-d-old spores, in addition to depressing germination, washing reduced the capacity of the pathogen to invade its host. This capacity was restored when the matrix was restored to the spore suspension.
