Abstract— Photoreactivating enzyme (PRE) activity was measured in hypocotyls of Phaseolus vulgaris L. seedlings using a radioimmunoassay for thymine dimers. In dark‐grown seedlings a five‐fold increase in PRE activity was observed after 6 h of irradiation with blue or far‐red light. Short time irradiations with red light were also effective. Reversibility of this red‐light‐effect by a subsequent short term irradiation with far‐red light and also the high effectiveness of continuous far‐red light indicate that PRE activity is under phytochrome control.
