CHIRAL GENERATIONS, POINCARE POLYNOMIALS AND COSET MODELS WITH N=2 SUPERSYMMETRY

A method is developed for calculating the number of chiral generations for string compactifications on a class of N = 2 superconformal theories. It is shown that this number is determined by specific values of the Poincare polynomial of the underlying untwisted N = 2 superconformal theory. This result is applied to compactifications on tensor products of coset models with N = 2 supersymmetry and a recursion formula is derived which provides the needed values of the Poincare polynomials. In overlapping cases the results are in agreement with those obtained using the Landau-Ginzburg description.
