The forward scattering amplitude and hence the total cross section for photons incident on nuclei is calculated in the eikonal approximation. The scattering amplitude is taken to be the sum of two types of coherent amplitudes; (a) elastic scattering from each nucleon and (b) a regenerative amplitude corresponding to the production of the vector mesons ρ, ω and φ{symbol} on one nucleon and radiative capture on another. A considerable effect due to the finite mass of the vector mesons is seen at energies up to 10 GeV in heavy nuclei. This manifests itself as an apparent violation of vector dominance for the photon-nucleus interaction which disappears at very high energies if vector dominance is valid for the photon-nucleon interaction. © 1969.
