EFFECT OF PARTICLE-SIZE ON THE MECHANICAL-BEHAVIOR OF SAND GEOTEXTILE COMPOSITES

The results of direct shear tests on sands of different particle sizes, reinforced with woven geotextile embedded normal to the shear plane, are used for studying the effects of confining stress and particle size on mechanical behaviour at the sand-geotextile interface. An analysis of test results indicates that the magnitude of confining stress determines the mode of failure of the composite material The test results also indicate that the value of apparent interface friction angle decreases with increasing values of confining stress. The aperture ratio, A/D50, defined as the ratio of geotextile aperture size to the average sand particle size, affects the value of apparent interface friction angle which, according to test results, attains its maximum value when A/D50 almost-equal-to 1.60.
