The formation of protective films by electrochemical anodic oxidation on thin films of Permalloy Ni0.8Fe0.2 was studied. The kinetics of formation was investigated under potentiostatic conditions in several neutral and slightly basic electrolytes. The thickness of the passive film was studied by impedance measurements. It was found to be constant (10 to 12 angstrom) in time and oxidation potential. The most blocking passive films were obtained in borate buffer solution (pH = 8.4). The growth kinetics of the passive film fits a point defect model where oxide defects play a crucial role.
