THE EFFECT OF PHOSPHATES ON THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF ALPHA-BRASS TO STRESS-CORROSION CRACKING IN SODIUM-NITRITE

Di-sodiumhydrogenphosphate (DSHP) inhibits the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of alpha-brass in 0.1 M NaNO2. It increases the maximum stress and the time to failure at failure in slow strain-rate tests. It also changes the mode of failure to ductile failure in the presence of moderate concentrations. The results are complemented by some electrochemical measurements. The inhibiting effect of DSHP is attributed to the formation of zinc phosphate on the surface of the alloy which inhibits dezincification and subsequently the SCC of the brass.
