HYPNOTIZABILITY IS MODIFIABLE - ALTERNATIVE APPROACH

Both the trait viewpoint and the skill-learning model were discussed as were a number of issues differentiating the 2 approaches to human hypnotizability modification. The controversy concerning the roles played by both aptitude and attitude was highlighted. The skill-learning position was plausible and the nature of skill-based approaches to training was considered. Empirical findings consistent with the skill viewpoint were summarized. Methodological deficiencies and suggestions for future directions in modification research were discussed. The concluding section specifies 3 probable core components in successful modification procedures including optimal learning factors, attitudinal and set factors and cognitive strategy factors.
