THE BETA-DIMETHYLSULPHONIOPROPIONATE (DMSP) CONTENT OF MACROALGAE FROM ANTARCTICA AND SOUTHERN CHILE

The β-dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) content of extreme cold water macroalgae isolated from Antarctica and Southern Chile was determined by gas-liquid chromatography. Within the members of the Rhodophyceae and Phaeophyceae only traces of DMSP could be detected, which agrees with data from the literature on red and brown algal species from temperate regions. In contrast, all eulittoral, antarctic Chlorophyceae contained higher concentrations as compared to macroalgae from temperate waters. This suggests a relation between the DMSP accumulation and temperature, possibly as part of an ‘antifreeze’ system, analogous to the role of DMSP as an osmolyte in many algae subjected to variations in salinity.
