Hydrogen iodide was photolyzed in the presence of C4D10 and the yields of HD by hot-atom abstraction were used together with those from HBr photolysis to evaluate the initial H-atom kinetic energy at three wavelengths. The results give 0.93 ± 0.10, 0.81 ± 0.10, and 1.00 ± 0.10 as the probabilities for ground-state I(52P3/2) formation in dissociations at 2537, 2288, and 1850 Å, respectively. These results together with the HI absorption curve give a qualitative description of the continuum components in terms of the states proposed by Mulliken.
