QUANTITATIVE C-13 NMR-STUDY OF UREA FORMALDEHYDE RESINS IN RELATION TO THE FORMALDEHYDE EMISSION LEVELS

A quantitative carbon-13 NMR spectroscopic study on urea-formaldehyde resins, at various stages in the synthesis and at various formaldehyde/urea mole ratios, revealed an improved descriptive chemistry of methylolation and methylene bond-forming reactions. The results also revealed the polymer molecular structure in more detail. Resins prepared with an initial formaldehyde/urea mole ratio of 2.10, 1.75, and 1.50 were evaluated at a final formaldehyde/urea ratio of 1.0 by manufacturing and testing wood particleboards. The emitted formaldehyde level of the board decreased, albeit small, as the initial mole ratio decreased. © 1990, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
