INFLUENCE OF INSTRUCTIONS ON JUDGMENTS OF UNFAMILIAR SHAPES

An experiment using 30 Ss showed that the mean shape judgement of a slanted nonsense figure differed significantly depending on the instructions which S received. 3 types of instructions were used: real, projective, and apparent. An examination of the nature of judgment showed that the mean apparend judgment might not be unique but could be the result of an artifactual confounding of the type of judgments given under the other instruction conditions.
