The electrophoretic mobilities of nucleotides on neutral paper can be predicted by U = kQ M 2 3, where U = electrophoretic mobility, k = proportionality constant, Q = charge, and M = molecular weight. The equation is accurate for molecules with molecular weights in the range 200-2000. The equation is useful for predicting whether a given set of nucleotides can be adequately separated at a particular pH. It is also valuable in the initial identification of unknown nucleotides. © 1979.
