We have learned a great deal about novae from discussions with Drs G. T. Bath; G; Ferland; M; Friedjung; Grasdalen; R; Joseph; S. Sato and J. Truran and from correspondence with Drs J. R. Phillips and T. Yamamoto; even though many of them do not totally share our point of view. Drs R. F. Jameson; C; Penn; E. R. Seaquist and J. W. Truran kindly provided us with material in advance of publication. S. Dunlop of the BAA has been extremely helpful in putting at our disposal data accumulated by members of the BAA Variable Star Section. The comments of an anonymous referee were extremely helpful in making our presentation more coherent. This work was supported by the SRC; who also provided travel funds to attend IAU Symposium 96; at which some of our discussions took place/The provision of travel funds by the IAU and the University of Keele is also gratefully acknowledged. We would also like to thank Mrs E. Durrant; who typed several versions of the manuscript and Mr S. Cartledge for preparing the figures;
