Using the site-selective spectroscopic technique described in part I of this series we obtained highly resolved fluorescence and one- and two-photon excitation spectra for the 1 1Ag-1 1B2u transition of naphthalene-h8 and -d8, isolated in an argon matrix at about 12 K. The resolution and sensitivity obtained in these experiments are comparable to jet spectroscopy experiments obtained without resolution of rotational contours, if not better. The experiments allowed assignment of several previously unobserved ag, b3g, b1u and b2u vibrations of the 1 1B2u state. Simultaneous measurement of two-photon intensity and two-photon polarization provides information necessary to resolve contradictory literature assignments for several bands seen in the TPE spectrum of h8. © 1990.
