INFLUENCE OF ZINC DOPING ON THE NORMAL-STATE PROPERTIES OF COPPER OXIDES

We describe normal state properties of copper oxides by an effective t-J model where the non double occupancy of the sites resulting from strong correlations is taken into account via a gauge field coupling holons and spinons. We show that zinc doping results in the appearance of an induced magnetic moment on the surrounding copper sites. Taking the magnetic screening of the spinons into account, we compute the magnitude of the moment for various cuprates. We also study the evolution of the moment with hole doping. This moment strongly influences in a detrimental fashion the so-called spin gap phase, and -as a result- the superconducting phase. Our results are quite consistent with transport (resistivity) and magnetic (neutron scattering, NMR) measurements.
