KINETICS AND MECHANISM OF REACTION BETWEEN POTASSIUM PEROXODISULPHATE AND LACTIC ACID

摘要
Kinetic investigations of this reaction reveal the singular features of reactions involving S2O8--. The rate is first order in peroxodisulphate and independent of reductant concentration; reaction products include acetaldehyde and carbon dioxide. The activation energy is 21·2 Kcals. H+ ion and oxygen catalyse the reaction. This system reduces Hg++ to Hg+, suggesting the production of transient free radicals. A chain mechanism in which radical-ion chain carriers participate accounts for the rate law. © 1969.
