ADSORPTION AND ELECTROPHORETIC STUDIES OF POLY(ACRYLIC ACID) ON CALCIUM SULFATE

The adsorption on calcium sulfate of poly(acrylic acid) of molecular weight under 25,000 has been studied by analytical and electrophoretic techniques. The adsorption isotherms were found to be of the Langmuir type. The adsorption capacity was found to increase with increasing pH and, hence, the adsorption appeared to occur by an electrostatic mechanism. An elucidation of the polymer configuration at the interface has been provided by correlating the adsorption and electrophoretic data. Studies on fractionated samples of this polymer revealed an increase in adsorption capacity with increasing molecular weight. It was found that a lower molecular weight fraction was adsorbed in preference to a higher molecular weight fraction. Adsorption equilibrium was reached within 10 minutes for the highest molecular weight studied. © 1968.
