STRUCTURAL GRANULARITY AND IONIC-CONDUCTION MECHANISM IN GLASS

Ionic conduction processes in glass are discussed in terms of a simple "granular" (cluster bypass) model in which the preferred pathways for ionic migration (the percolation channels) are located within a connective tissue surrounding more densely packed islands of material (or clusters). The connectivity of the conduction pathways has been calculated by simple percolation theory from measured values of the "limiting slopes" to the conduction isotherms obtained in mixed cation glasses. In general, the connectivity parameter is small (Z<2.5) but there is apparently a connection between how Z varies with temperature and Angell's concept of "strong" and "fragile" glasses. Structural evidence for the cluster/tissue model has been reported elsewhere. © 1990.
