Detailed investigations are made of orientational luminescent characteristics of YAlO3‐Nd3+ laser crystals. Anisotropy of the spatial distribution of the intermanifold luminescence intensity due to 4F3/2 → 4I9/2−15/2 channels is observed and its theoretical interpretation is given. The intermanifold and the “Stark” luminescence branching ratios, the peaks, and the effective cross‐sections of the transitions are determined for the three crystallographic directions a, b, and c of the crystal at 77 and 300 K. The probabilities of spontaneous transitions and a number of some other spectroscopic parameters are also measured. On the base of obtained data the question of using the Judd‐Ofelt treatment for the analysis of spectral properties of anisotropic crystals doped with TR3+ ions is discussed.
