ATTEMPTS TO PREPARE BI-BASED SUPERCONDUCTORS ON A CARBON-FIBER SUBSTRATE

We have studied the properties of thin films prepared by laser ablation of a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8-δ target on carbon fiber substrates. Excimer laser radiation was used to prepare the films. Films were deposited on polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fibers. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to detect the presence of the elements in the film. The structure of the film was studied using x-ray diffraction (XRD). Resistance measurements indicated that the films were not superconducting down to 4.5 K, but the XPS and XRD data showed that films could be formed on the fibers. We find evidence of oxidation of the carbon fiber surface by the superconductor material.
