EFFECTS OF RAPID CHANGES IN SALINITY ON THE OSMOREGULATION OF POSTSMOLT ATLANTIC SALMON (SALMO-SALAR)

Blood parameters in postsmolt Atlantic salmon were studied during artificial introduction of abrupt salinity changes between 34% and 10 and 5 parts per thousand. Mortality in the test groups did not increase compared to the control group. Plasma levels of Na+ and Cl- were significantly decreased in the low-salinity periods. Plasma levels of Mg2+ and haematocrit were significantly increased during low salinity, and plasma levels of K+ were not significantly affected by the changes in salinity. This experiment indicates that salinity changes alone will not cause heavy mortality in fjord-based salmon farms, but salinity changes in combination with other environmental factors may represent a stress situation for postsmolt Atlantic salmon.
