Helium ion implantation has been used into crystals of Nd:YAG, Nd:YAP and Nd:LiNbO3 to define crystal waveguide lasers. Details for the optimisation of the waveguide mode confinement and attenuation for both the pump and laser frequencies are presented for YAG. Many other materials are suitable for waveguide production and current potential laser hosts include the garnets GGG, GSAG and GSGG, Alexandrite, LiCaAlF6, LNA, YLF and Al2O3. Ion implanted waveguides have been constructed in all these material. Comments on the very different damage and relaxation mechanisms are presented.
