In examining the effects of particle shape, it is necessary to be able to separate accurately the differently shaped fractions in a mixture. An apparatus is described which is capable of efficient separation of spheres from particles of non-spherical shape, based on the different path followed on rolling down a rotating, inclined plate. The effect of shape on sieving time has been investigated, and it is concluded that sieving time depends on the number of points on the particle, rather than on flatness or elongation. A mutual effect is observed in a mixture of spheres and irregular particles, but flakes do not hinder the passage of spheres, and the components of a mixture behave very much as individual shapes. © 1969.
