摘要
Immediate effects of external attachment of an integrated radio frequency and ultrasonic biotelemetry transmitter on swimming behavior of the cownose ray Rhinoptera bonasus (Mitchill 1815) were studied prior to its deployment in the field. Changes in cownose ray swimming behavior due to attachment of an external, buoyant transmitter were recorded by video-taping captive cownose rays of two size classes with and without a transmitter attached. The number of wing-beats · s-1 (bps) was used as a measure of energy expenditure. Comparison of bps before and after attachment demonstrated that external transmitter attachment had no immediate statistically significant effect on ray swimming behavior below a transmitterto-ray mass ratio of 0.03. The ratio of transmitter-to-animal mass may provide an index of the suitability of a given transmitter to a fish of a particular size. Knowledge of behavioral effects of the biotelemetry transmitter is of paramount importance prior to its use in field studies. © 1990.
