摘要
RF capacitively coupled plasma has been used to deposit hard carbon/diamond-like carbon at a range of temperatures, pressures, DC bias and gas compositions. The substrate chosen was AISI 430 stainless steel. Optimum growth conditions were established from wear and adhesion tests. Further investigations utilized X-ray diffraction and optical, scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. Optimum conditions were found for the particular experimental coating configuration and then used to coat surgical needles of the same substrate composition. The needles were tested in penetration tests in pigs' eyes and were found to produce a one-third reduction in the maximum penetration force required. © 1992.
