The octanol/water partition coefficient of cadmium was measured in the presence of ethyl-, isopropyl-, isobutyl-, and amylxanthates and diethyldithiocarbamate. For each complexing agent, the threshold concentration at which hydrophobic cadmium complexes started to appear was established. Cadmium was shown to form hydrophobic complexes with xanthates and diethyl-dithiocarbamate (maximal log P(ow) = 1.73-2.64) at total ligand concentrations of 10(-6) to 10(-1) M. The proportion of cadmium in the octanol phase began to increase within the range of approximately 10(-6.5) to 10(-6) M for xanthate and approximately 10(-5.0) M for diethyldithiocarbamate.
