Blends of poly(2-vinylnaphthalene) (P2VN) with poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PnBMA) or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) are prepared by solvent casting from toluene at temperatures from 295 to 353 K for P2VN concentrations from 0.10 to 10.0 wt percent. Excimer fluorescence from P2VN is analyzed by a two-phase model for blend morphology. Deviations from thermodynamic equilibrium are interpreted in terms of kinetic restrictions arising during solvent evaporation from the ternary system. Annealing experiments in P2VN/ PMMA blends yield a rate constant for increase in local P2VN concentration that increases as the blend becomes closer to its equilibrium-phase morphology.
