The rate of polymerization of nitrobenzene during cavitation in an intense ultrasonic field has been studied as a function of the presence of gaseous and liquid solutes. The presence of a gaseous solute with high solubility dramatically lowers the reaction rate, as does the presence of a liquid solute with a high vapor pressure. A model is postulated to explain the trends observed. Agreement between the model predictions and experimental data is satisfactory, considering that the model contains serious oversimplifications due to the complexity of the process. The results are relevant to natural processes such as bitumen formation and to design of lubricating and hydraulic fluids. © 1979 American Chemical Society.
