Summary. Possible genetical and immunochemical pathways in the MNSsUu blood group system are discussed. The importance of a common precursor substance, which is modified by the MN, then by the Uu and finally by the Ss genes, is emphasized. The dominant role which N‐acetyl‐neuraminic acid plays in the biosynthesis of several blood group and myxovirus receptors of human and animal origin is discussed. © 1969 Blackwell Publishing Ltd
