A pair of superconducting coils in an approximate Helmholtz configuration is described which is capable of producing a magnetic field intensity in excess of 15 kOe with a homogeneity of ±0.1% within 0.5 cm of the field center and ±1.0% within 1.5 cm. The pair is mounted and geared so as to produce a horizontal field whose direction can be rotated 360° about a vertical axis. The magnet assembly has a 2.90 cm diam vertical access hole for a sample mount and can be accommodated within a 12.7 cm i.d. Dewar. © 1969 The American Institute of Physics.
