LORENZ LIKE CHAOS IN A GAUSSIAN MODE LASER WITH A RADIALLY DEPENDENT GAIN

Numerical simulations of the Maxwell-Bloch equations modelling an optically pumped laser with Gaussian shaped radially varying gain profile show regions of instability leading to Lorenz like chaos. A graph showing the relationship between the chaos threshold and the pump power shows a minimum when the diameter of the pump beam is comparable to the diameter of the beam waist of the resonant Gaussian mode of the cavity. For ratios of pump beam diameter to cavity mode diameter different from one, the power necessary to reach chaos threshold becomes very large.
