CYCLOPENTYL AND OMEGA-5 MONOUNSATURATED FATTY-ACIDS FROM RED ALGAE OF THE SOLIERIACEAE

Detailed fatty acid analyses are reported for Agardhiella tenera, Anatheca montagnei, Euchema cottonii, E. spinosum and Meristotheca senegalensis. Capillary GC and GC-MS data revealed the presence of four unusual compounds: the cyclopentyl fatty acids dihydrohydnocarpic and dihydrochaulmoogric and the two monounsaturated fatty acids C16:1ω5 and C18:1ω5. The co-occurrence in large amounts of these four compounds among living organisms provide an interesting chemotaxonomic feature of the Solieriaceae. © 1990.
