SPIN POLARIZATION IN NORMAL PHOTOEMISSION BY LINEARLY POLARIZED-LIGHT FROM NONMAGNETIC (110) SURFACES

For linearly polarized radiation with a non-zero surface projection of the electric-field vector, photoelectrons emitted normal to non-magnetic surfaces with an at most twofold rotation axis generally have a spin polarization component perpendicular to the surface. This is firstly substantiated by symmetry arguments. For cubic (110) surfaces, an analytical calculation reveals that this effect is due to the spin-orbit-induced hybridization of basis functions of different spatial-symmetry types. Numerical relativistic one-step-model multiple-scattering calculations for Pt(110) yield polarization values up to 60%, which depend sensitively on the surface reconstruction.
