The room temperature Raman spectra of α‐HgI2 are re‐examined using the backscattering configuration on natural crystallographic faces. It is shown that the assignments of the symmetry species involved in the three Raman peaks is strongly dependent on the experimental procedure and that a great care is recommanded in choosing the scattering surface as well as in selecting the scattered radiations. By this method, the 18 cm−1 peak is attributed to a pure Eg‐type symmetry, the 29 cm−1 peak to both Eg and B1g‐type symmetries and the 114 cm−1 structure to mainly A1g and B1g species.
