This paper presents a real-time sampling algorithm for gathering data into a digital computer from several concurrently operating gas chromatographs. The algorithm guarantees each chromatograph periodic access with no time jitter, and it also permits each instrument to operate at any one of a set of predefined input rates which are multiples of two of each other. The algorithm also permits input rates to be halved any number of times during a run; computer loading is thus often very significantly reduced. The paper indicates how one may dynamically limit access to the computer when other portions of the system are overloading and gives a simple example of the algorithm's use. © 1969, American Chemical Society.
